Writing
At New Christ Church, we have developed our own Writing Journey based on the principles of high quality texts, secure foundational skills and a range of outcomes that inspire our children to write. The focus of each sequence of learning is the audience and purpose of the piece and the effect intended for the reader. We strive to develop our children as writers rather than focussing on producing writing.
A vital part of our writing sequence is daily sentence construction and dictation to introduce, teach, embed and secure spelling, punctuation and grammar skills. These are planned to meet the current needs of the class at that time. These are then reinforced throughout units of writing where their application is linked to the audience, purpose and intended effect.
EYFS develop their foundational skills through regular handwriting in a printed script and daily RWINC phonics, which continues into Year 1. Our EYFS children share high quality books, rhymes and songs and participate in Drawing Club to develop their love and confidence for reading and writing. From Year 2 onwards, foundational skills of transcription are taught daily through RWINC spelling and Letterjoin handwriting. Please see the links for parent support at home below.
Outcomes for all children are planned from high quality texts and include opportunities for children to write about issues or subjects that are individual and meaningful to them, providing them with choice and the opportunity for creativity.
Children are taught how to edit their writing by proof-reading for errors and then editing to improve the effectiveness of the writing for the reader.
